Sep 13 - Oct 29    Million Dollar Quartet
There was no plan for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins to record together on December 4, 1956, but as fate would have it, they did and left behind a historic and mind-blowing album. Million Dollar Quartet tells that story, with all the raw energy and monumental talent you’ve come to expect from these music giants. It all begins in the Sun Record recording studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Up and comer Jerry Lee Lewis is recording songs with rockabilly king Carl Perkins when already iconic Elvis resley stops by the studio with his girlfriend. The not-quite-yet-a-guitar-god Johnny Cash is there to pay a visit to music manager Sam Phillips. Throw them all together and you have one of the most unexpected, unprecedented and unforgettable musical moments in history. It was the first and only time they played together and, through their musical genius, created an explosive album that has yet to be matched. Nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Musical and a win for Best Supporting Actor, Million Dollar Quartet features some of the biggest and best songs of all time, including “Peace in the Valley,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line,” “Hound Dog” and “Great Balls of Fire.” This is the show that ran in Chicago from 2008 to 2016 and spanned more than 2,500 performances. Critics called it “the most exuberant theatrical event,” “dazzling from first beat to last” and “the best live rock ‘n’ roll show I have ever seen.” It is the third longest-running show in Chicago theatre history and the Paramount is about to do its production of it. Be there. Suggested Rating: PG Out of respect for our patrons, children ages 2 and under are not permitted in the theatre. Out of respect for the artists and in adherence to the union rules we are contractually obligated to enforce, all photography and video recordings of the stage, as well as of the production itself (including audio recording) are strictly prohibited. This policy will be enforced.

Oct 4    Faculty Speaker Series: “Beautiful Noise”
Short description: How do we think of aesthetic judgment with regard to sound art, including under that term work going all the way back to the musique concrete of the 1950s, through electro-acoustic music of the ’60s and ’70s, and up to work that’s being done today? Long description: How do we think of aesthetic judgment with regard to sound art, including under that term work going all the way back to the musique concrete of the 1950s, through electro-acoustic music of the ’60s and ’70s, and up to work that's being done today? Traditional aesthetic theories are often ill-suited to deal easily with music because they often privilege either visuality or symbolic reference, neither of which is proper to audition. Add to that the challenges of coming to terms with artworks that either greatly expand the definition of the musical, or jettison any claims of being music at all, and the difficulty involved in making use of such theories to judge the quality of these sorts of works becomes even more apparent. This lecture will explore what should be expected from an aesthetic theory that can deal with this kind of art.

Oct 10    Leadership Institute Series: Engaging Volunteers through Nonprofit Leadership
Volunteers contribute billions of hours to our society and dollars to our economy. Engaging and recognizing volunteers is one of the hallmarks of successful mission-based organizations. Whether you are a nonprofit volunteer or staff member, this session led by Celene Mielcarek, Volunteer Programs Director at PAWS Chicago will provide tools to enhance how volunteers contribute. Join us for conversation and networking as we explore principles of volunteer engagement and management, from recruiting and training to advancement and appreciation. PAWS Chicago is dedicated to building No Kill communities–starting with a No Kill Chicago– where all healthy and treatable pets are saved. Since our founding in 1997, the number of homeless dogs and cats killed annually in Chicago has dropped 77 percent. But with nearly 10,000 homeless pets still dying in our city each year, there is more important work to be done. PAWS perform more than 18,000 free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries to decrease the number of animals that end up in shelters and in danger of being euthanized. PAWS also finds new loving families for nearly 6,000 homeless animals each year through our two adoption centers as well as numerous off-site events.

Oct 18    Film: “The Kid” (1921 silent film) featuring Jay Warren, Pipe Organ
Short description: “The Kid” is perhaps one of Charlie Chaplin’s most beloved films. The movie was the first feature-length film directed by Chaplin and it made a child star out of Jackie Coogan, who plays his adopted son and sidekick. “The Kid” is considered one of the greatest films of the silent era. And/Or: The Tramp cares for an abandoned child, but events put that relationship in jeopardy. Long description: Charlie Chaplin was already an international star when he decided to break out of the short-film format and make his first full-length feature. “The Kid” doesn’t merely show Chaplin at a turning point, when he proved that he was a serious film director — it remains an expressive masterwork of silent cinema. In it, he stars as his lovable Tramp character, this time raising an orphan (a remarkable young Jackie Coogan) he has rescued from the streets. Chaplin and Coogan make a miraculous pair in this nimble marriage of sentiment and slapstick, a film that is, as its opening title card states, “a picture with a smile — and perhaps, a tear.” Movie trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTlUxNzt5Kw

Oct 19    Do You Have Questions about the Affordable Care Act in the Current Political Environment, So Do We?
Open Door Health Center presents a lunch and learn for surrounding area organizations to attend that will be focused around understanding and discussing how the current political environment is affecting healthcare/the affordable care act. For approximately the first hour, Maximillian Boykin, the community advocacy and social justice manager from AIDS Foundation of Chicago will give a presentation about the current healthcare policies on the state and federal level and how it impacts citizens, such as vulnerable populations. There will also be a representative from either Open Door Health Center or AIDS Foundation of Chicago to talk about the duties and benefits of having a medical benefits coordinator present in an organization as well as enrollment. The second part of the presentation will be a roundtable structure where all organizations present can discuss their thoughts about the information that they just received as well as how they have dealt with the uncertainties regarding healthcare in their organizations. Suggestions and thoughts about how our community can be better served are always welcome! All in all, we need to remain vigilant about what our politicians are doing and advocate for those that need and deserve a voice in public policy. We hope you can attend this Lunch and Learn!

Oct 24    Main Stage: Conversation with General David H. Petraeus (U.S. Army, Retired)
Short description: A highly decorated general and one of the most prominent combat commanders in American history, David H. Petraeus has dedicated his life to public service, leading military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan and then serving as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Petraeus will participate in a moderated question and answer session where he addresses the significant global challenges facing countries and organizations today, including ongoing international security issues, macroeconomic trends, energy policy and the tasks of strategic leadership in the 21st century. And/Or: Petraeus addresses the significant global challenges facing countries and organizations today. Long description: One of the most effective military leaders in recent U.S. history, General David H. Petraeus — a highly decorated four-star general, whose distinguished military career spanned over 37 years and culminated in six straight commands (five of which were in combat) — addresses the most significant global challenges facing us today, including ongoing international security issues, macroeconomic trends and the tasks of strategic leadership in the 21st century. Widely credited for changing the course of two wars — by dramatically reducing the violence in Iraq when he led the so-called “Surge” and by halting the Taliban’s momentum in Afghanistan when he led the operation there — Petraeus was also instrumental in reshaping American military doctrine and then in implementing it when he led the conduct of comprehensive civil-military counterinsurgency campaigns. Following his military service, Petraeus led the CIA, where he oversaw significant achievements in America’s global counterterrorism campaign, pursued a substantial initiative to increase worldwide intelligence coverage, guided the development of a strategic plan for the agency and oversaw the establishment of a new Economic Security Center.
