Feb 5 - Feb 9    Free HIV Testing in Observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
Aurora, Illinois- In observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, February 7th, 2018, Open Door Health Center of Illinois is offering FREE HIV testing via an appointment between February 5th and February 9th at 157 S. Lincoln Avenue, IL 60505. Open Door encourages everyone to take control of their health and get tested. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), an estimated 1.1 million people in the United States were living with HIV at the end of 2015. Unfortunately, the African American population is disproportionately affected by HIV. In the United States alone in 2016, there were 10, 223 new HIV diagnoses among black men who have sexual contact with other men, and 4,189 new HIV diagnoses among black women who have sexual contact with men. Also, in 2015, African Americans accounted for 45% of HIV diagnoses, even though they only comprised 12% of the U.S. population. Locally, in the seven collar counties of Chicago, there were sixteen new cases of HIV among African Americans in 2017. Open Door Health Center offers testing for those that are twelve years or older and recommends testing for • Men who have unprotected sex with other men • Anyone who injects drugs and shares needles • Anyone who has unprotected sex with an injection drug user • Anyone who has a sexually transmitted disease • Anyone who exchanges sex for money or drugs Please contact Marcos Bostho at 847-695-1093 ext. 224 to make an appointment to get your FREE HIV test.

The sound of the orchestra tuning its instruments fills the air. The smell of liquor and perfume permeates your nostrils, causing a shiver of sinful delight. You catch a dancer’s eye and wonder what she’s doing after the show. After all, life is a cabaret, and anything goes. It’s the early 1930s in Berlin, and life is changing. On the horizon is an ugly and dangerous threat, but that’s no concern for sensational cabaret singer Sally Bowles whose only goal in life is to have a good time. Sally soon finds herself living with a young writer visiting from America to work on a new novel. While their relationship moves beyond just being friends, around them the lives of citizens go from ordinary to a nightmare. Will Sally recognize her own selfishness, or will she look to the ground as the Nazis steamroll over everything she holds dear? Cabaret is one of the most well-known Broadway musicals of all time, and it’s because of the extraordinary songs, universal appeal and a spellbinding story that still holds true in today’s world. Feb 8    Nathalia Holt presents “Rocket Girls: The Unsung Heroes of NASA”
Short description: Nathalia Holt — science writer, microbiologist and the New York Times best-selling author of “Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars” — tells the inspiring stories of NASA’s earliest women scientists and mathematicians. Long description: Nathalia Holt is the author of “Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars” and “Cured: The People Who Defeated HIV” and a former fellow at the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT and Harvard University. Her writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, The Atlantic, Slate, Time and Popular Science. In the 1940s and 50s, when the newly minted Jet Propulsion Laboratory needed quick-thinking mathematicians to calculate velocities and plot trajectories, they didn’t turn to male graduates. Rather, they recruited an elite group of young women who, with only pencil, paper and mathematical prowess, transformed rocket design, helped bring about the first American satellites and made the exploration of the solar system possible. Feb 22    (Next)Woman Up: Cassandra Gaddo
Our monthly speaker series is dedicated to showcasing successful and inspiring female
influencers, leaders, artist, and activists.

This month at The Mid-America Club, we are pleased to present Cassandra Gaddo,
managing director of Step Up, Chicago Chapter, as our featured guest speaker. She
oversees the organization’s regional strategy, including programs, fundraising,
operations, talent management and human resources, and expansion. Through her work,
she helps realize the organization’s mission of propelling girls from under-resourced
communities to fulfill their potential, becoming confident, college-bound, career-focused
individuals ready to join the next generation of professional women.

Cassandra is known as a fierce advocate for the advancement and empowerment of
women and girls. As a first-generation college student from the rural Midwest, she is
passionate about creating equal access to college and leveraging social capital to open
doors in the workforce. Previously, she served as vice president of the board of directors
of Rape Victim Advocates, Chicago’s first and oldest first response direct-service
provider for survivors of sexual assault, as well as on CARE Chicago’s Media Initiative,
the Chicago Foundation for Women’s Young Women’s Leadership Council and The
Chicago Council on Global Affairs’ Young Professionals, which she represented in the
Young Atlanticist Summit in Chicago. She frequently writes and speaks on issues
pertaining to women and girls.

From 2007-2012, Cassandra was managing editor and electronic media editor of Today’s
Chicago Woman magazine, where she oversaw content serving and celebrating
professional women in Chicago, as well as topics such as domestic human trafficking
and Illinois’ rape kit testing backlog. During that time, she was also active with the
Today’s Chicago Woman Foundation, which is dedicated to raising grants for under-
funded Chicago charities serving at-risk women and girls. She can trace her passion for
social justice to Loyola University Chicago, where she graduated summa cum laude with
a Bachelor’s in journalism, and minors in English, political science and women’s studies.
Cassandra is currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Policy and Administration at
Northwestern University. She began volunteering with Step Up in 2008.
