The sound of the orchestra tuning its instruments fills the air. The smell of liquor and perfume permeates your nostrils, causing a shiver of sinful delight. You catch a dancer’s eye and wonder what she’s doing after the show. After all, life is a cabaret, and anything goes. It’s the early 1930s in Berlin, and life is changing. On the horizon is an ugly and dangerous threat, but that’s no concern for sensational cabaret singer Sally Bowles whose only goal in life is to have a good time. Sally soon finds herself living with a young writer visiting from America to work on a new novel. While their relationship moves beyond just being friends, around them the lives of citizens go from ordinary to a nightmare. Will Sally recognize her own selfishness, or will she look to the ground as the Nazis steamroll over everything she holds dear? Cabaret is one of the most well-known Broadway musicals of all time, and it’s because of the extraordinary songs, universal appeal and a spellbinding story that still holds true in today’s world. Nominated for a total of 26 Tony Awards over three decades and winning a total of 12 including Best Musical and Best Revival of a Musical, Cabaret is exactly what musical theatre should be: entertaining, enlightening, provocative, edgy and a continuing reflection of our own lives. This groundbreaking musical was unlike anything audiences had seen back when it first premiered, and you’ll feel the same way when it hits the Paramount stage. Suggested Rating: PG-13 Out of respect for our patrons, children ages 2 and under are not permitted in the theatre. Out of respect for the artists and in adherence to the union rules we are contractually obligated to enforce, all photography and video recordings of the stage, as well as of the production itself (including audio recording) are strictly prohibited. This policy will be enforced.

Mar 2    Bowl-a-thon for Project Eliminate
• Helping eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus Some have already made their excuses for their poor bowling on Friday night (March 2) for the Kiwanis Club of Aurora Project Eliminate Bowl-a-thon at Funway – Batavia, 1135 S. River St. The shoes were too tight and yes, I had the wrong bowling ball. Can I break 100? I sure hope so! How I bowl will not matter. It's going to be a fun evening and will help support Kiwanis Project Eliminate. The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus—a deadly disease that steals the lives of 34,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. Founded on Sept. 9, 1916, the Aurora club was the first club in the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District and the twenty-first club chartered in the world. Since that time, Kiwanis has grown to over 8,500 clubs and membership more than 320,000. Kiwanis is in more than 90 nations or geographic areas. The Kiwanis Club of Aurora currently has 109 members. The club is also the sponsor of new Kiwanis clubs in Oswego and Yorkville.

The Community Career Center (CCC) Roundtable is a monthly forum for people to discuss their careers, workplace culture and business trends. Participants will be encouraged to discuss values, beliefs, behaviors and attitudes in the workplace with the intent of sharing tips to encourage attendees to stay motivated and focused in their job so that they are a better employee, manager and community member. This forum is open to all members of the community, including business representatives, community advocates, CCC members and past members. The CCC Roundtable will meet on the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10:00-11:30. NOTE: This is not a job search workshop.

Every now and then life stops us in our tracks. The circumstances may be as dramatic as a major power outage or as ordinary as bad cold, but once we are up and running again some of us recall the downtime with more warmth than regret. Why is it so hard for us to rest without being forced to do so, and what gets lost in our race to save time? Join Barbara Brown Taylor for a look at the ancient spiritual practice of stopping, which is up for renewal in our own time. Taylor is a New York Times best-selling author, college professor and Episcopal priest. Her first memoir, “Leaving Church,” won a 2006 Author of the Year award from the Georgia Writers Association. Her last book, “Learning to Walk in the Dark,” was featured on the cover of Time magazine. She has served on the faculty of Piedmont College since 1998 as the Butman Professor of Religion and has been a guest speaker at Emory, Duke, Princeton and Yale, as well as a guest on “SuperSoul Sunday” with Oprah Winfrey.

Mar 17    68th Annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast
The Kiwanis Club of Aurora in its 102nd year celebration presents this annual breakfast event to fund their work with children and the community. Last year, the club served some 1,400 breakfasts. Kiwanis Club of Aurora President John Ross notes “I’m so happy for the continued community support of this outstanding event since 1951.” Annually, the Aurora, Illinois Kiwanis Foundation donates $30,000, primarily to Aurora’s youth. These donations occur through awarding of Kiwanis scholarships (managed by the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley); subsidies to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and baseball teams; help to area youth programs; and the sponsorship of clubs for youth at the elementary, high school and college levels.

Mar 27    Illinois Supreme Court Justices Anne M. Burke & Rita B. Garman: “Women in Leadership: Courage, Barriers, & the Future
Born in Chicago, Anne M. Burke received a BA in education from DePaul University and a JD from IIT/Chicago-Kent College of Law. She was admitted to the Federal Court, Northern District of Illinois (1983) and the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit (1985). Burke certified for the Trial Bar, Federal District Court, was appointed judge to the Court of Claims by Governor James Thompson (1987) and reappointed by Governor Jim Edgar (1991). She was appointed special counsel to the governor for child welfare services (1994) and was appointed to the Appellate Court, First District (1995). Burke was elected to the Appellate Court, First District, for a full term (1996). She is a member of the American, Illinois State, Chicago, and Women's Bar Associations, and the Illinois Judges’ Association. She is also a founder of the Special Olympics. Born in Aurora, Rita B. Garman received a BS in economics with highest honors from the University of Illinois, Bronze Tablet, and a JD with distinction from the University of Iowa’s College of Law. She was assistant state’s attorney in Vermilion County (1969–1973), was engaged in private practice with Sebat, Swanson, Banks, Lessen & Garman (1973), and was an associate circuit judge for 12 years. Garman was a circuit judge in the Fifth Judicial Circuit (1986–1995) and presiding circuit judge (1987–1995). She was assigned to the Appellate Court, Fourth District (1995), and was elected to the position (1996). Garman was appointed to the Supreme Court (2001), and elected to the court (2002). She is a member of the Vermilion County, Illinois State and Iowa Bar Associations, and the Illinois Judges’ Association.

This timely panel discussion will focus on best practices for preventing sexual harassment and other inappropriate conduct in the workplace. The EEOC representative will present the newest information about their mediation program and civility training. The other two panelists will provide real world examples of behaviors to avoid and how to address them.  

Panelists include: Julie Bretz, EEOC Alternative Dispute Resolution Supervising Attorney; Michael H. Cramer of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C.; Laurie Huspen, Human Resources Consultant and Founder of Taboo Topix.  All are welcome and the event is free of charge.
