The City of Aurora is proposing a new Vacant Building Ordinance with the intent to establish a timeline towards re-occupancy through redevelopment, or demolition of the property. The goal is to reduce the potential for blight and criminal activities due to vacant buildings through the successful redevelopment of vacant properties to the highest asset use.
The proposed ordinance would establish regulations governing the registration, maintenance, security and monitoring of vacant properties including routine inspections of registered properties and code enforcement for those properties with the responsible parties. Owners will be required to file a registration statement of intent for the property with the vacant structure registration certificate.
