Description
From the mid-19th century through the early 20th century, almost one-quarter of the population of the tiny kingdom of Luxembourg left for the promise of a new life in America. Our City of Aurora ranks among the five largest American communities for Luxembourg immigration—starting in 1850 and lasting for decades, immigrants from Luxembourg settled in Aurora in large numbers.
Now, Luxembourg - USA: A Migration Story, a special exhibit from the Luxembourg American Cultural Society, is coming to the downtown Art & History Center's 2nd Floor Gallery. Opening May 13, this will be the first Illinois showing of the exhibit.
Originally funded and created by Luxembourg's Ministry of Culture, the exhibit was first shown at Ellis Island, June-September, 2007.
The exhibit contains 36 colorful panels telling the story of Luxembourg immigration to the US in the 19th and 20th centuries, along with an overview of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg today.
The exhibit will be augmented with photos, information, and artifacts from the Historical Society's own collection, highlighting Aurora's Luxembourg connections.
