| If you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong, just be glad you’re not William “Buddy” Hobbes. When he was only a baby, Buddy crawled into Santa’s sack of presents and was whisked away to the North Pole where he lived as an elf for years. Buddy grew up thinking he was just like all the others. He took joy in doing elf things, like making toys. But there was always something off about him. He towers over his fellow elves and just doesn’t get cobbling. Buddy soon realizes the truth about being … gulp … human and goes in search of his father, a workaholic publisher. Imagine Buddy’s horror when he finds out his dad does not share his love for Christmas. In fact, he couldn’t care less about it. But this is the infectiously-cheerful wannabe elf who grew up with jolly old St. Nick, and a little problem like that won’t deter Buddy from changing people’s hearts and minds. Based on the hilarious 2003 Will Ferrell movie, Elf is one of those rare holiday shows that will have both kids and adults lighting up with laughter, humming tunes like “A Christmas Song” and “Sparklejollytwinklejingley” for days and rediscovering what it means to be a family. And Paramount has become the place that families head to for memorable holiday experiences. From the two-story Christmas tree in the lobby, to the thousands of sparkling lights adorning the banisters, to the carolers filling the air with song, you can’t help but get into the spirit the minute you walk through the doors. No child left inside! Come out and play in the snow with our Family Snowshoe Hike from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
This class and tour will start with some instruction where we will cover how to put on and take off your snowshoes, select the proper snowshoe, and dress for the outdoors in winter. After that we head out on the snow and learn how to get up from a fall, select a comfortable stride for walking and stomping, and turning around. Then we practice what you’ve learned as we explore the trails.
The price for this experience is $25 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and under, and includes snowshoes, poles, and a $5 Rocktown gift certificate for adults. Please call the store at 630-506-5706 or sign up below to reserve your spot.
We need a minimum of 6 participants and the cooperation of Mother Nature to be able to Gear Up and Head Out in the snow. In the event we need to cancel a decision will be made 24 hours in advance. We will post on our website and Facebook, and contact all participants.

Learn how much fun cross country skiing can be in a low key, social setting. Meet some new like minded people, learn a new skill. Have some fun in the snow…..we live in it, might as well learn to enjoy it! You will be surprised at what a GREAT total body activity this is.
This 2 hour classic technique class begins with 30 minutes of instruction and equipment fitting followed by one hour of on-snow instruction, where you learn how to get up from a fall, proper pole placement, different ski techniques such as poling and striding, how to engage the ski with the snow, and how to slow down or stop. The remainder of the class time is for you to practice what you learned. We will ski at Nelson Lake Forest Preserve, with the location of the skiing subject to change due to conditions.
The price for this Cross Country experience is $40 and includes skis, boots, poles, and a $5 Rocktown Gift Certificate, $20 if you have your own skis. | Jan 14 Snowshoeing 101 |
Snowshoeing is a great low impact aerobic activity. However, there is more to snowshoeing than simply taking a plunge in some untracked snow. Come have some fun in the snow, meet some new people, and learn the ins and outs of the fastest growing winter sport at our Snowshoeing 101 class.
This 90-minute class will start with 30 minutes of instruction where we will cover how to put on and take off your snowshoes, select the proper snowshoe, and dress for the outdoors in winter. After that, we head out on the snow and learn how to get up from a fall, select a comfortable stride for walking and stomping, and turning around. The class will conclude with a guided tour. Location of the hike is TBD based on conditions. All participants will be contacted 48 hours in advance.
The price for this Snowshoeing 101 experience is $30 and includes snowshoes, poles, and a $5 gift Rocktown gift certificate. Class size is limited so don’t delay. Call 630-506-5706 or sign up below to reserve your spot. Kids are welcome and 1/2 price! We need a minimum of 3 participants and the cooperation of Mother Nature to hold the class. In the event Mother Nature does not cooperate or we fail to get the minimum amount of participants we will make a decision 24 hrs in advance. Learn how much fun cross country skiing can be in a low key, social setting. Meet some new like minded people, learn a new skill. Have some fun in the snow…..we live in it, might as well learn to enjoy it! You will be surprised at what a GREAT total body activity this is.
Details: 2 hour classic technique class with 30 minutes of instruction and equipment fitting followed by one hour of on-snow instruction. Learn how to get up from a fall, proper pole placement, different ski techniques such as poling and striding, how to engage the ski with the snow, and how to slow down or stop. The remainder of the class time is for you to practice what you learned.
Location: Nelson Lake Forest Preserve, with location of the skiing subject to change due to conditions. We will meet at the location, not the store.
Price: $40 and includes skis, boots, poles, and a $5 Rocktown Gift Certificate, $20 if you have your own skis.
Register: Please call 630-506-5706 or sign up below to reserve your spot. If you sign up online and are renting equipment, please include your height, weight, and shoe size in the notes section. Class size is limited to 12 so don’t delay.

Snowshoeing is a great low impact aerobic activity. However there is more to snowshoeing than simply taking a plunge in some untracked snow. Come have some fun in the snow, meet some new people, and learn the ins and outs of the fastest growing winter sport at our Snowshoeing 101 class.
Details: 90 minute class with 30 minutes of instruction covering how to put on and take off your snowshoes, select the proper snowshoe, and dress for the outdoors in winter. Learn how to get up from a fall, select a comfortable stride for walking and stomping, and turning around. Class concludes with a guided tour.
Location: Nelson Lake. Location of hike is subject to change based on conditions. We will meet at Nelson Lake, not the store.
What to wear/bring: Moisture wicking base layer. Water repellent jacket and pants, or gaiters. Water proof boots preferred. Hat, gloves, and layer as needed for temperatures. Bottle of water. Dress for warmer than the temps. This is exercise!

We need a minimum of 3 participants and the cooperation of Mother Nature to hold the class. In the event Mother Nature does not cooperate or we fail to get the minimum amount of participants we will make a decision 24 hrs in advance. Long description: More than 120 paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints will be on view in “Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain,” a major retrospective exhibition organized by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) at the University of Oregon. Rick Bartow (1946–2016), one of the nation’s most prominent contemporary Native American artists, was a member of the Wiyot tribe of Northern California and had close ties with the Siletz community. He graduated in 1969 from Western Oregon University with a degree in secondary arts education and served in the Vietnam War (1969–1971). His work is permanently held in more than 60 public institutions in the United States, including Yale University Art Gallery, Connecticut; Brooklyn Museum, New York; and Peabody Essex Museum, Massachusetts. He has had 35 solo museum exhibitions and his art has been referenced in more than 250 books, catalogs and articles. In 2012, commissioned by The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, Bartow created “We Were Always Here,” a monumental pair of sculptures, more than 20 feet high, which was installed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Personal experiences, literature and art from around the globe informed Bartow’s art. Throughout his career, he consistently explored self-portraiture and animal imagery, often blurring the lines between the two; many describe his work as transformational and visual storytelling. |

| A hallmark of American democracy is political responsiveness to public demands — the idea that legislators in particular should vote in the manner dictated by their constituents. But in recent decades, a significant number of former legislators have taken lucrative positions at top lobbying firms and private companies, earning hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars per year. Commentators have pointed out that ex-legislators frequently work for companies they helped while in office, raising suspicions that legislators are engaged in a quid pro quo with special interests — with dire political consequences. This lecture presents research challenging this conventional wisdom and provides an alternative framework in which special interests help guarantee — not destroy — representative government in America. |
