Description
The Aurora Area CrimeStoppers is a volunteer organization that works in close cooperation with the Aurora Police Department to encourage community members to report criminal or other suspicious activity.
CrimeStoppers operates through a Board of Directors, comprised of a diverse cross-section of members of the community. The Board is currently seeking to increase and expand its membership and diversity, so it can be a more effective and representative body for our community. The Board, as a whole, meets on a quarterly basis; although there are active sub-committees that meet more frequently, based on their specific activities and interests.
The goal of CrimeStoppers is essentially two-fold: to deter crime through public awareness of the organization and the “tip line” and to assist in the prosecution of crime by collecting “tips” from anonymous members of the community in order to assist law enforcement.
CrimeStoppers both actively (through community events, outreach, word of mouth, etc) and passively (through signs, newsletters, print ads, newspaper coverage, etc) promotes the CrimeStopper’s “tip line,” an anonymous telephone number that community members can call (in English or Spanish) to forward information relating to possible criminal activity they of which they may be aware. This information is relayed to the Aurora Police Department, who then follows up on the information to investigate the alleged criminal activity. If the “tip” or “lead” results in arrests or prosecution, a cash award (as much as $5000) is provided to the anonymous “source.”
CrimeStoppers has more than 30 years of history of assisting the Aurora Police Department in solving a wide range of crimes, ranging from property damage to significant drug operations to felony assault and many other crimes that have endangered the property and people of our community. Through the efforts of CrimeStoppers, many of these crimes have been solved, and hopefully, thousands more have been prevented by the organization's efforts.
Today, CrimeStoppers is working to meet the needs and changes of our growing and changing city.
We are reaching out to new communities and constituencies to seek new Board members, new supporters, and to spread the word about CrimeStoppers throughout the Aurora area.
We are also launching a new marketing campaign that we hope will engage community members, raise awareness, and help deter crime on every block, in every neighborhood, and on every street in our city.
