On this episode, O’Brien welcomed Peter Aguilera, owner and founder of AA Electric and Aurora Electric, and Roberto Avila, chef owner of Altiro Latin Fusion, Amore Mio, and Red Room on NY, to talk about their passion for being Aurora business owners, the importance of networking and mentorship, and how to get through the tough times.

Aguilera spoke of pursuing the American Dream when he came to the U.S. 45 years ago. Now, with nearly 30 years of success with his company AA Electric, which has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, he touts ethics as the key to good business, citing a strong belief in doing it right, standing by the work, and always keeping an eye on quality.

Avila told about his passionate pursuit of restaurants that began when he came to the U.S. for better job opportunities. Starting with work in an Italian restaurant, he learned every aspect of the business and established his first restaurant in Geneva, Illinois, in 2012 before finding his place in Downtown Aurora in 2020. Despite opening Altiro right as the pandemic was beginning, his belief in the dream and commitment to hard work helped see it through to today.

Although they have businesses in different parts of the service industry, both men championed the importance of excellent customer service and connections with clients, which in part is realized through networking. Aguilera said that networking was imperative and builds trust and reciprocation, but you have to stay with it. Avila supported this, saying that it creates the face and personality of the restaurant that makes customers want to return.

When asked about functioning through a difficult economy, Aguilera said he has learned to differentiate services and work with clients to offset the rising costs of materials, noting that giving clients choices also helps build strong relationships. Avila stood by the importance of maintaining the quality of his offerings and committing to delivering that level of quality and service no matter what.

For the next generation of entrepreneurs, Aguilera noted the importance of getting to know your neighbors and others in your business community and helping other new small businesses navigate the landscape. Both men also championed the value of mentorships, whether it was leading by example, giving opportunities to those eager to learn from them, or even just beginning conversations.
